When I first moved to Denver as a Journeyman last August, I met a refugee family from Afghanistan. When I first met this family, it was at a back-to-school event at one of the resettlement agencies where they were able to receive clothes and resources for the upcoming school year. After meeting this family, I did not think I would see them again, since I did not know where their children went to school or get their contact information.

In the Lord’s provision, I saw the children at our partner school later that month and the parents were members of our grocery program. Over the past year, my relationship with this family has grown in ways I never thought it would, with the parents referring to me as their sister and auntie to their children. It has been such a joy to get to know this family and build friendship.

This past month, I was at their house for lunch. When we sat down to eat, the father asked me what Christians prayed before meals because he had seen on TV that families would pray before their meals. This opened the door for a wonderful gospel conversation. I was able to share what I believed as a follower of Jesus, the truths of the Bible, and even what baptism was! After I shared what I believed, the parents asked questions and even began to share what their Islam beliefs.

While we had talked about me being a follower of Jesus before and a little about their beliefs as Muslims, this was the most in-depth gospel conversation we had ever had. Pray that this conversation opens the doors for more questions about Jesus and that their hearts would be softened to the gospel.
